BSL Level 2 – Intermediate British Sign Language Course

Take your BSL skills to the next level with our 16-week Level 2 BSL course. This course is ideal for intermediate learners who wish to become more fluent in British Sign Language and improve their ability to have full conversations in BSL. Led by Richard Walklett, our director and experienced hard of hearing tutor, you’ll benefit from his personal experience and understanding of the learning process.

This 1.5-hour per week course provides a structured approach to building fluency. You’ll be encouraged to practice conversationally with others, present your ideas informally in pairs and groups, and if you’re comfortable, to the larger group.

Course Overview:

Throughout 16 weeks, you’ll expand your vocabulary, improve your grammar, and refine your conversational BSL skills. Topics covered include:

  • Work Life: Learn job-related vocabulary and sign work routines.

  • Home Life: Discuss family, home routines, and personal experiences.

  • Education: Sign about academic topics and school life.

  • Health and Fitness: Learn how to sign about health, fitness routines, and medical topics.

  • Travel and Holidays: Talk about planning trips and discussing destinations.

  • Food and Drink: Talk about meals, dietary preferences, and dining out.

  • Shopping and Spending: Sign about purchases, budgeting, and consumer habits.

Course Details:

  • Duration: 16 weeks, 1.5 hours per week.

  • Location: Various venues throughout the South East.

Who Can Join?

You do not need a Level 1 qualification in BSL to join the Level 2 course. If you have completed Level 1 with Sign Together, simply discuss your signing experience with your tutor. They will assess whether you are ready for the Level 2 course based on your skill level.

If you have studied BSL elsewhere, please get in touch with us for a short informal chat. We’ll assess your signing ability to ensure the Level 2 course is the right fit for you.

Why Choose This Course?

  • Fluency and Confidence: This course is perfect for those who want to achieve conversational fluency in BSL. You'll work on vocabulary, but more importantly, on becoming confident in interactive communication.

  • Practice with Peers: You will have multiple opportunities to sign with other learners, strengthening your fluency and helping you feel comfortable in group interactions. The supportive learning environment encourages everyone to engage and practice.

  • Community: At Sign Together, we value the sense of community. By taking this course, you’re not just learning BSL—you’re becoming part of a community of signers who support each other’s learning and growth.

  • Signing Presentations: You’ll get time to present your own signs, either informally in smaller groups or, if you're comfortable, to the larger group. This helps you improve your public signing skills.

  • Real-World Communication: This course will prepare you for everyday conversations, helping you feel comfortable communicating with BSL users in various settings—whether at work, in social situations, or while traveling.

Exams and Certification:

  • Productive Exam: A filmed conversation with your tutor on one of the topics learned (e.g., Food and Drink, Travel and Holidays, or Shopping and Spending).

  • Receptive Exam: A video-based exam where you will watch and answer questions based on native BSL signers discussing various topics.

  • Presentation Exam: A 3-5 minute presentation on a given topic. This allows you to demonstrate your ability to communicate confidently and clearly in BSL.

  • Certificate of Participation: Upon completing the course, you will receive a certificate of participation if requested. For those pursuing an industry-recognized qualification, we offer Signature exams for an additional fee.
