BSL For Beginners – Level 1 British Sign Language Course
Our 14-week BSL for Beginners course offers a fun and methodical approach to learning British Sign Language (BSL) in an encouraging and confidence-building environment. This course is designed to introduce you to the fundamentals of BSL, whether you're learning to communicate with those who are Deaf, hard of hearing, or non-verbal, or simply exploring a new way to express yourself.
BSL is a visual and expressive language, filled with humor and creative gestures, and is widely embraced by people from all walks of life. Many use BSL to foster better communication, while others enjoy learning it as a peaceful and fun way to connect with the world around them.
Course Highlights:
Over the 14 weeks, you will learn essential vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structures that will help you engage in everyday conversations. Our syllabus covers a wide range of topics, including:

Alphabet & Fingerspelling: Learn how to introduce yourself and spell names.

Numbers & Times: Sign dates, times, and learn to express numbers confidently.

Weather, Days, & Months: Discuss the weather, time of day, and calendar-related topics.

Animals & Colours: Learn how to describe animals and use colour vocabulary.

Transport & Directions: Master the signs for different modes of transport and giving directions.

Family, Descriptions & Clothing: Talk about family members, their appearance, and describe clothing.

Food & Drink: Sign about your favourite meals and beverages.

Home & Hobbies: Express activities at home and talk about your hobbies.

Duration: 14 weeks, 1 hour a week on a Monday Evening in person with a live tutor.

Location: Oxford - The Old Fire Station, Oxford City Centre (40 George St, Oxford OX1 2AQ)

Teaching Method: Fun, hands-on approach with interactive lessons designed to build confidence in both receptive (understanding) and productive (signing) skills.

Tutor Support: All of our tutors are fully qualified with Signature qualifications, and will guide you through the course content and practical exercises, ensuring you gain the skills to communicate effectively in BSL.

Ability to continue to an accredited qualification: The course is structured according to Signature’s curriculum, a leading authority in BSL qualifications. While the course includes full preparation for the Level 1 qualification, please note that the cost does not include the exam fee. Your tutor will provide further information about exams during the course should you wish to move forward to the qualification. *The course is also perfectly suited to those who wish to learn for leisure only.
